An executive brief to CEOs, managers, employees, management consultants and academic lecturers

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is fast becoming a new business paradigm and a major preoccupation for modern organizations with far reaching impacts competitive positioning and market access. This is reflected by the newly established International Standard ISO/DIS 26000, according to which, Social responsibility of organizations is achieved through “ethical behavior”(item 2.1.18). “Ethical behavior” (2.1.6) is defined as “behavior that is in accordance with accepted principles of right or good conduct (…). The problem not answered is how to measure “ethical behavior”

The EC1000 standard has been developed in order to make possible MEASURING present “ethical behavior” within an organization or company, to make PROJECTIONS to strengthen it, to schedule for IMPLEMENTATION and to EVALUATE the achieved EFFECTS. The standard presents   “management through ethicality”, a modern method and a set of managerial tools to achieve competitive advantage and labor productivity growth through PRINCIPLES of ethical work application motivating employee creativity and participation.

1.       PRINCIPLES of ethical work (177), (or decisions & work ethics) are the core contents of EC1000 standard. They are derived from four international reference documents, (described in the standard), and divided into five decision areas: MISSION, PRODUCT, TECHNOLOGY, PERSONNEL POLICY and FINANCIAL POLICY. “EC” stands for Ethical Competitiveness, and “1000” indicates the highest possible score on the PRINCIPLES’ application.

2.       The EC1000 allows each organization to establish its own value system through allocation of specific weights to each of the PRINCIPLES and the resulting impact measures on competitiveness and productivity.

3.       You may MEASURE the “work ethicality (e) as the degree of application of the PRINCIPLES, and “Ethicality level (E)” in your organization in just few days. Our research findings in Poland indicate that the organizations with lowest ethicality level have achieved just over (E) 200 points and the organizations with highest level achieved just under 900 points out of a 1000 maximum. Organizations scoring (e) > 60% receive the Diploma: “Firms CREW with high work ethicality”. Those scoring (E) > 700 points, receive a “WHITE CERTIFICATE” of Ethicality.

4.       If the ethicality level (E) is only “average” (400 to 700 points) it may indicate an unused potential of creative engagement of the organizations’ human capital. In that case the EC1000 will help to PROJECT ethicality growth, schedule IMPLEMENTATION and to EVALUATE the EFFECTS on competitiveness, labor productivity and social responsibility gains.
